Admission Requirements

Advanced Placement Students

LVN/LPN and Military students will be considered for advanced placement based on prior learning and experience. Students' cognitive and psychomotor skills will be assessed and based on their knowledge and experience or prior/current education, will be given credit for prior learning as appropriate. The following policy is a way to recognize our veterans for their contributions.

LVN to RN Transition

Degree/Non-Degree Candidate

Students choosing this option are Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN’s) or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN’s). These students would be eligible to enter the third semester of the Associate in Science in Nursing program after completing the recommended Role Transition courses and receive credit for prior learning through currency, challenge by exam, or completed remedial activities. Students can opt to meet all of the requirements for the Associate in Science in Nursing degree (degree candidate) or to satisfy the course requirements for only those courses that are required by the California State Board of Registered Nursing as the content required for RN licensure (nondegree candidate). Students can apply for advanced placement if he/she has completed courses at another college. Advanced Placement Policy and Procedure can be found on the Nursing website.

Military Advanced Placement

Military personnel will be assessed for credit for prior learning and determine eligibility for advanced placement if the military student (active duty, veterans) has completed courses that meet particular nursing course expectations. Advanced Placement Policy and Procedure for military personnel can be found on the Nursing website.

Degree Candidate

In addition, a “Pre-Nursing Information Workshop attendance is mandatory. 

30 Unit Non-Degree Option

Students choosing this option are Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN’s) or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN’s) who would be eligible to enter the third semester of the program after the LVN to RN Transition preparatory courses NURS-510 and NURS-572 are completed. Students can opt to meet all of the requirements of the Associate Degree in Science in Nursing degree (degree candidate) or to satisfy the course requirements for only those courses that are required by the California Board of Registered Nursing as the content required for RN licensure (non-degree candidate). Students can apply for advanced placement into the LVN-RN option if he/she has completed courses at another college. This student will be required to satisfy 30-semester units in nursing and physical sciences in order to qualify them to apply for RN licensure in California. This option is recognized only in the state of California. Students will be admitted based on space availability.

Note: AREA G (Math Competency) can be demonstrated by a high school math course at or above the level of Algebra 2 with a grade of C or better.

An Associate Degree in this program requires students to complete MSJC's local General Education, Option A, by fulfilling all general education areas. In addition, students must complete all major requirements and complete an overall total of 60 degree applicable units with a minimum 2.0 GPA.

Minimum cumulative college level GPA of 2.5 on 4.0 scale with a grade of “C” or better in the following courses:

NOTE: Students who have AP scores to satisfy ENGL-101 College Composition (formerly Freshman Composition) and Math to meet MSJC program admission requirements will need to provide official scores. Students must meet with a Health and Wellness Counselor to review and complete the AP petition process.
