Where the Food is made with love; seasoned with faith
The first time I had a Mahi-Mahi Burger was during a visit to Bloody Mary’s Bar and Grill in Bora Bora. It was the most incredible fresh-caught fish burger I had ever tasted. Hubby and I so loved these burgers that we made it a point to have lunch there at least once during our visits to the island. We simply could not get enough of them. While we have since sampled other Mahi Burgers, none compares to the ones you can get at Bloody Mary’s. The only way I know of to get the real deal is to board a plane and head to the beautiful South Pacific island of Bora Bora.
During one particular visit to the island, we invited our island friend and his wife to join us for lunch. Terry was our underwater guide around the island any time we were in Bora Bora. We started each day by meeting at the dock and heading out for the morning on a new adventure – no two outings were exactly the same. Terry knew the best out-of-the-way places to meet and greet some amazing creatures including sharks, sting rays and a massive, majestic yet shy Manta Ray that called the deeper waters of the lagoon home. Toward the end of our last visit to the island, we suggested Terry bring his wife on our excursion so that we could all have lunch together at our favorite spot. Terry in turn suggested they bring us to their favorite spot. It turned out we were talking about the same low-key bar and grill. After a beautiful morning spent swimming with sharks, Terry pointed his boat toward the dock of Bloody Mary’s. We skimmed across the sparkling waters of the lagoon, the spray off the bow cooling our faces.
Upon our arrival to the Bar and Grill, the waitress offered up menus, which were declined. As she took the orders around the table, we could not help but laugh – four Mahi Burgers, all garnished the same way. Kiddo was the odd-man out, opting for a hamburger. Terry and Kiddo had become fast friends during our visits and Terry could not help but to give Kiddo a hard time. “If you wanna be an island boy, you gotta have the Mahi burger.” No matter how we tried to get him to give up is hamburger, there was no way Kiddo was eating fish. The sad part is that by the time Kiddo became a teenager, his strong objection to fish has passed. While the burgers we grill up at home are tasty, there is no comparison to the fresh-caught burgers served up at Bloody Mary’s.
Mahi-Mahi Burgers
4 Mahi-Mahi Burgers (see note)
4 Lettuce Leaves
1 Tomato, Sliced
1/2 Red Onion, Sliced
1 Avocado, mashed to make spreadable with a little lemon juice to hold color
1 Avocado, sliced for additional avocado, if desired
4 Tablespoons Mayonnaise
4 Hamburger Buns
Heat gas grill to medium-high. (While you can do this on a charcoal grill, the burgers cook in about 5 minutes per side, so a gas grill is quicker.)
Grill Mahi-Mahi Burgers about 3-5 minutes per side. While burgers are grilling, toast buns if desired.
Build Mahi-Mahi burgers as you would Hamburgers. Spread mayonnaise and/or avocado spread on buns. Place Mahi-Mahi burger on bottom bun, top with lettuce, tomato and sliced red onion. If desired, top with sliced avocado.
Note: Wild-Caught best, and can be found in frozen section of Costco. While not always available at Costco, if you see them, snatch them up. Trader Joe’s sometimes carries domestic, ranch-raised Mahi Burgers. Again, this is a hit and miss.
Bloody Mary’s has its own dock since many visitors reach the restaurant by boat. No shoes? No problem – the floors are as sandy as the beach.
