EDGELEY, N.D. — High winds were a factor in a side-impact collision on Highway 281 near here that killed a 64-year-old LaMoure County woman Sunday, Nov. 6.

According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, a 2014 Western Star pulling a 2015 Polar tanker trailer and a 2014 Ford F150 pulling an empty enclosed trailer were both traveling northbound on Highway 281 Sunday morning. At around mile marker 41.6, the Western Star began passing the slower-traveling Ford. The trailer behind the Ford was flipped by the wind and detached, pulling the back end of the Ford to the right, causing the Ford to rotate left into the southbound lane.

The Western Star applied brakes and struck the Ford in the driver side door. The Ford then overturned onto the passenger side facing northwest in the southbound lane.

The Western Star pulled to the southbound shoulder after impact. The driver, Paul Bowen, 46, of Glendive, Montana, was uninjured.

The occupants of the Ford had to be extricated before being transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center. The driver, John Whoel, 69, Kulm, N.D., suffered serious injuries. The passenger, whose name is expected to be released Monday, Nov. 7, was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

No one involved was wearing a seatbelt. The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
