A woman was forced to undergo multiple amputations and facial reconstruction surgery after a vicious dog attack left her in critical condition.

Brittany Skoland, from Iowa, US, had both her legs and parts of her hands amputated as a result of the attack by three pit bulls. Local authorities received a call from a neighbour who claimed to hear someone's cries for help.

A responding officer found Brittany being mauled by three animals. The officers initially tried to scare the hounds away from Brittany, but that plan failed, forcing police to shoot all three dogs.

Neighbor Kerri Johnson said: "I had heard the gunshots. I came outside originally and I saw police with his gun drawn. He had said for me to go inside and I did, I did go inside, but after a couple of moments, my curiosity is piqued. I stepped out into the driveway just to take a peek, I saw a black dog lying down on the ground, deceased, which is super sad. I don't know what happened to the lady, but I know somebody got pulled off in a stretcher."

The victim was carried out in a stretcher, taken to Unity Point Trinity Medical Center by an ambulance and then finally put into a helicopter to be taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Brittany, who's also a c, suffered severe head trauma and was subject to several surgeries once she was admitted to the hospital.

Brittany's aunt Teresa Hanus created a GoFundMe page to raise money for her niece's medical bills. "If you could find it in Your heart to help this beautiful young lady manage what has happened to her, our Family would be Forever Grateful," Teresa wrote. She added that her niece is now using a wheelchair, unable to enter her home without help because the door is too narrow.

Adjusting the door to make it wider for Brittany is one of the fundraiser's goals. Teresa has currently raised ,664 (£8,397), but revealed that Brittany's struggles can't be fixed monetarily.

"She has had both legs amputated to her knees and parts of her hands. She is going to need facial reconstruction surgery, she also has serious head trauma and much more," the aunt explained. "Those who know Brittany, know she loves to be outside, doing yard work, helping her mum decorate for the Holidays. She also enjoys playing outside with her younger children."
