Schedule I Schedule I Schedule I

Love out your drug dealing fantasies with Schedule I. It's a fun game that is all about taking control of the streets and making as much money as you can in the process. I came across this one by complete accident and while the title is a clever play on an actual term used by the drug enforcement agency, I do wonder if they could have given this a more attention grabbing subtitle or something. This is an early access game as I write this, but I wanted to talk about a few of the cool features that this game has to offer.

A New Gun In Town!

The premise of Schedule I is that we play the role of a drug dealer who has just moved to Hyland Point, a city on the West Coast. We have “coasted” into town with no money and no contacts, but we do not care! We know what we have to do and that is build our drug empire from the ground up. This is basically all about becoming the ultimate drug kingpin of this city and not letting the cops or the drug cartels get in the way of our hopefully ever expanding business! The game has a bit of humor about it which is something that I got a massive kick out of.

The Cook

Of course, to make money in Schedule I, you have to have a great product to sell on the street and you have to actually manufacture your drugs in this game. You start off small, perhaps with just one plant to grow weed, but you can make all kinds of drugs in this game and you have to actually cook the recipes and make sure that they are exactly what your crazy customers on the streets are looking for. Eventually, as your business grows and you make more money. You can make new kinds of drugs and even hire people who will cook for you, enabling you to make even more money by flooding the streets with your product. There is a really good sense of progression here and that is something I thought was really cool about the gameplay.

Hitting The Streets

Now, it is one thing to have the product that people want, but a huge part of Schedule I is getting your product out onto the streets! This means that you have to get out there yourself during the early days, you can walk or even skateboard until you get a car. However, the bigger you become, the bigger a target you put on your back, and before you know it, you will be in shootouts and car chases with the cops and rival drug dealers. Eventually, just like your growing business, you will be able to hire people to work for you and help get your product out onto the street, but that itself comes with challenges. To be honest with you, I liked getting hands on with the growing and the taking over the streets, it kind of gave me a bit of a rush if I am being honest like I was Walter White and Jesse Pinkman rolled into one….. bitch!

Oh, Geez Rick, I Don’t Know About This!

For the art style of Schedule I, they have gone for a very cool and rather interesting style. It has a very comedy look about it and the first thing I thought when I saw this was Rick and Morty, but other stuff made by those guys such as games like High on Life and Saves the Universe are great comparisons too. I like the cartoon and wacky style, the characters have a very funny look about them and while the game may have a bit of a “basic” look about it. I do think that it helps the game stand out from the other drug dealer simulators that tend to go for a more realistic look to them.

If you check out a trailer or even just a few screenshots of Schedule I and you think that it looks like a fun time, chances are, you are exactly the kind of person that this game was made for. It is a lot of fun, but the whole drug making process and then getting out there and selling it and protecting your rep and business was way more fun than I thought that it would be. Even though this is a game that is in early access as I write this, I still highly recommend that you check it out.

Pros:

  • I loved the grimy city setting
  • There is a bit of satirical humor about this game which I liked
  • I got a kick out of the art style they went for
  • There is more depth to the gameplay than you would expect

Cons:

  • As of writing, this is an early access game
  • No word on what new features they plan to add as the game nears release
