Tyrese Gibson and Norma Mitchell filed for divorce in October 2008, after 10 months of marriage. It was accompanied by a lengthy custody battle over their daughter, Shayla. A 2009 report published by Radar Online claimed that Mitchell wanted modifications in their custody agreement and child and spousal support.
In 2015, Mitchell expressed her desire to “move on and move forward” during an interview with Madame Noire. “I just have come to a point where I felt that I really want to have a voice and speak up for myself,” she said. “It’s been a long time that I have been going through this and I just want to move on and move forward.”
In August 2017, Norma Mitchell accused Gibson of physically abusing Shayla. This led to the involvement of the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services in the matter.
