The search for Baylee Carver, a 17-year-old Albemarle teenager, ended on Tuesday when she was found dead, police said.
Searchers found the remains of Carver on Tuesday around 4:55 p.m. north of Highway 49 and Route 601 in Cabarrus County. The teenager's boyfriend, Joshua Biles, 20, has already been charged with felony obstruction of justice and concealment of death.
Baylee's grandfather, Bennie Carver, said he was released from the hospital hours before his family learned investigators found his granddaughter.
"It's hard but I'm glad its over with," Carver said. "The hunt and everything, we were just hoping and prayed justice be done."
Carver and his wife, Marie, said they're grateful for the crews who spent four days searching more than 1,000 miles in Stanly, Rowan and Cabarrus counties.
"A lot of people have been out here, and I want to thank everyone who been out here and been hunting for her," Carver said. "Even people who didn't know us."
The Albemarle Police Department said officers responded to a home along Floral Drive at 4:30 a.m. Friday after getting a 911 call from someone asking for help. The department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) said their inquiry led them to determine Baylee had died.
According to court documents, Baylee had obvious wounds to her body indicating she did not die naturally.
Albemarle police said her boyfriend Joshua Biles called 911 early Friday to report her death and that he had disposed of her body.
Biles is charged with felony obstruction and concealment of death. He is being held in the Stanly County jail.
Carver has strong words for whoever killed Baylee.
"I can't believe they had done something like this to her," Carver said. "And threw her out like a piece of trash, you know. It's awful. They don't even deserve to get out. They don't even deserve bond. They need to keep them in there."
“We offer our deepest condolences to the loved ones of Baylee Carver. As they mourn their loss, our hearts are with them during this difficult time," said Albemarle police chief Jason Bollhorst in a statement. "The Albemarle Police Department is grateful for all of the assistance and resources provided throughout the course of this search. The investigation is still ongoing.”
