OCEANA COUNTY, MI - A woman who lost her life in a drag racing incident Sunday was able to push her daughter out of the way of the crashing vehicles, according to the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash took place around 11:37 a.m. on Sunday, May 26, on the “drag strip” area of the Silver Lake State Park Sand Dunes, located in Golden Township in western Oceana County.

A modified Jeep CJ was racing northbound on the drag strip when its driver lost control while accelerating, police said in a news release. When the driver lost control, the jeep veered off the drag strip toward the crowd and hit a stationary vehicle, causing the vehicle to hit a woman standing nearby.

The victim - identified by police as 33-year-old Kadie Price, of Pierson - had been standing with her family near their vehicle to watch the race, police said.

Just prior to her being hit, Price was able to push her 2-year-old daughter out of harm’s way - very likely saving her daughter from serious injury or worse, police said.

Several bystanders attempted to assist Price, including Oceana County deputies, Silver Lake State Park rangers and staff. First aid efforts were unsuccessful and Price died from her injuries a short time later, police said.

An investigation into the crash is open and still ongoing, police said. The driver of the jeep - a 64-year-old Michigan man - has been identified, though his name is being withheld pending further investigation.

Oceana County deputies were assisted by the Silver Lake State Park staff, Michigan Department of Natural Resources officers, Mason County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigators, Life Ambulance staff and the Hart Fire Department.
