WKYC meteorologist Hollie Strano is out at the Cleveland NBC affiliate several months after returning to work following an arrest for drunken driving.
She announced the news on Facebook, saying that WKYC and parent company Tegna, terminated her employment after 22 years and that it happened after she shared her recovery journey publicly.
“I believe the actions of WKYC and Tegna demonstrate the stigma surrounding addiction that so many in our community experience every day,” she wrote.
Strano said she has been “honest and authentic” about her journey and that she is prioritiziing her sobriety and health.
On the Wildly Unprofessional podcast she talked about loving herself as a tool for recovery and stepped listeners through her addiction and the arrest that started the story.
Last Thanksgiving, Strano crashed her car into a utility pole and was arrested with a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit. She pled guilty to operating a vehicle under the influence and was sentenced to a six-day, driver-intervention program instead of jail and fined 5 plus court costs.
