A fiery, two car crash early Monday on Interstate 88 near DeKalb that closed some lanes for a period of time left one person killed and another critically injured, the Illinois State Police said.

According to the ISP, the crash occurred around 5:19 a.m. on I-88 in Maple Park near Watson Road when a wrong-way driver traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes crashed head on into another vehicle.

Both vehicles then became fully engulfed in flames, ISP said.

The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead on the scene, police said. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, police added.

All eastbound lanes were diverted to Peace Road shortly after the crash, ISP said. Lanes reopened at approximately 10:18 a.m.

According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, patchy, dense fog was reported early Monday in DeKalb and Kane counties, with visibility below one mile.
