Canelo Alvarez pro record, boxing stats and titles ahead of Jaime Munguia 2024 fight image

One of the most decorated boxers in the world, Canelo Alvarez has amassed a Hall of Fame resume since turning professional in 2005.

Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, the 33-year-old uses his elite boxing IQ to outclass his opponents. Canelo has made millions thanks to TV deals and sponsors.

Considered one of the best fighters to come out of Mexico, Canelo has a cult-like following, with fans coming in droves to watch him compete. That was certainly the case when he returned to his home city in May 2023 and beat John Ryder in Estadio Akron, in his first bout in Mexico since 2011.

Following a homecoming fight, Canelo signed with Premier Boxing Champions, securing a salary worth millions. He faced Jermell Charlo the then-undisputed super welterweight champion. Canelo ran through Charlo for twelve rounds, winning a one-sided beatdown that earned him his 60th pro win.

Up next for Canelo is a fight against 27-year-old Jaime Munguia. It is the first Mexico vs. Mexico fight for Canelo since facing Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2017.

The Sporting News looks into the career of Canelo, from where he started to how he got to where he is today.

What titles has Canelo Alvarez won?

Canelo is a four-weight world champion and the only boxer to become undisputed super middleweight champion.

He has held the following:

  • WBC, WBA, WBO, and The Ring super welterweight titles
  • WBC, WBA, IBF, and The Ring middleweight titles
  • WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF, and The Ring super middleweight titles
  • WBO light heavyweight title

What is Canelo Alvarez's boxing record?

Following an amateur record of 44-2, Canelo turned pro in 2005 and has compiled a record of 60-2-2.

Primarily fighting in Mexico to start his career, Canelo beat Matthew Hatton to win the WBC super welterweight title. Later, he beat Austin Trout to win the WBA and Ring titles.

In September 2013, at the age of 23, Canelo faced the toughest challenge of his career against then-pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather beat Canelo via majority decision, but Canelo used the setback as a learning experience.

Since that loss, Canelo has gone 18-1-1.

Canelo defeated Miguel Cotto to win the WBC and Ring middleweight titles in 2016. That same year he beat Liam Smith to win the WBO super welterweight crown.

In 2017, Canelo fought Gennadiy Golovkin to a split decision draw. The rematch in 2018 saw Canelo beat "GGG" to become WBC, WBA, and Ring middleweight champion. Both results were deemed controversial. It wouldn't be the last time they fought.

The following year, the Mexican beat Rocky Fielding for the WBA super middleweight title and won the IBF middleweight title from Daniel Jacobs in 2019.

Canelo went on the run of a lifetime soon after.

The orthodox boxer beat Sergey Kovalev for the WBO light heavyweight title before returning to super middleweight. He became the undisputed super middleweight champion in just 11 months, defeating Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant to win the WBA, WBC, WBO, IBF, and Ring belts.

After that, he decided to test his luck at light heavyweight again but lost in a one-sided affair against Dmitry Bivol in May 2022. A few months later, Canelo faced Golovkin again in a trilogy bout, beating him via unanimous decision to retain super middleweight gold. He did the same against John Ryder and Jermell Charlo, going the distance in four straight fights.
