He has written and produced over 26 number-one R&B hits and won 11 Grammy Awards.

Music Career

Babyface's Career

Babyface started performing in the group Manchild as a guitarist, and they found success in 1977 with the song “Especially for You.” At the same time, he played keyboard and guitar for the R&B group The Deele while honing his songwriting skills.

In the late 1980s, Babyface started writing and producing music for Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, After 7, Sheena Easton, and The Boys. In 1989, he co-founded LaFace Records and signed Toni Braxton, Usher, and TLC as some of its first artists.

An Industry Success

At LaFace Records, Babyface helped write TLC’s second album, CrazySexyCool, which became the group’s bestseller. TLC sold 75 million records worldwide thanks to his direction, while Toni Braxton sold over 15 million.

In 1990, Babyface produced Whitney Houston’s “I’m Your Baby Tonight,” his first no. 1 Top 40 hit in the US. Soon after, he wrote and produced Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love to You” and “End of the Road,” which both topped the charts.

In 1994, he co-wrote, co-produced, and performed backing vocals for Madonna’s album Bedtime Stories. From 1995 to 1997, he received three consecutive Grammy Awards for Producer of the Year.

More recently, Babyface worked with Lil Wayne in 2008 on his album Tha Carter III and produced Ariana Grande’s Yours Truly in 2013

In 2014, he collaborated with Barbara Streisand on Partners and performed a duet with her on the song “Evergreen.”

For Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, Babyface helped write the song “Stronger Together,” which she played after her speech at the Democratic National Convention.

While writing for other artists, Babyface also released his own music, including the albums Tender Lover in 1989, The Day in 1996, and Grown & Sexy in 2005.

Notable Ventures

Babyface has dabbled in acting and entertainment outside the music industry throughout his career as a musician and producer.

In 1994, he appeared on an episode of Beverly Hills, 90210, alongside Ian Ziering and launched the Edmonds Entertainment Group. This company produced the films Soul Food in 1997 and Josie and the Pussycats in 2001, and they provided the soundtrack to the 1998 film The Prince of Egypt

From 2004 to 2009, Edmonds Entertainment Group executive produced the reality series College Hill on BET. Babyface also helped write the official song of the 1996 Summer Olympics, “The Power of the Dream,” which Celine Dion performed.

In 2015, he portrayed Wesley Johnson in the biopic Whitney before competing on season 23 of Dancing with the Stars. At the same time, he released his eighth studio album, Return of the Tender Lover, which debuted at no. 39 on the Billboard 200.

In 2022, he released Girls Night Out, which was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Babyface announced a series of Las Vegas shows in April 2024, during which he’ll perform his biggest hits and some that he helped write for other artists.

Estimated Net Worth

In 2024, Babyface’s net worth is estimated to be 0 Million.

First Divorce: Denise Edmonds

Babyface married Denise Edmonds, formerly Denise Melinda Harris, in 1980. The marriage lasted 11 years, ending in divorce in 1991. Not much else is known about Babyface’s first marriage or divorce, as their time together was during the early stages of Babyface’s career. No settlement figures or divorce details were ever made public.

Second Divorce: Tracey Edmonds

Babyface’s second marriage, in 1992, to American businesswoman and TV producer Tracey Edmonds ended in divorce in 2005 after 13 years.

Tracey Edmonds filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, and initially sought physical custody of their two sons, Brandon and Dylan Edmonds, with visiting rights for Babyface. However, according to a superior court’s final judgment, the couple received joint custody, with all other divorce terms sealed by the court.

Although exact settlement figures were not made public and were mostly speculation, it is believed that Babyface was instructed to pay a substantial amount of money, somewhere in the millions, for child and spousal support due to his status and success.

Third Divorce: Nicole Pantenburg

In 2021, Babyface and his third wife, Nicole Patenburg, announced their divorce after seven years of marriage. The couple married in 2014 and have a 12-year-old daughter, Peyton Nicole.

The separation was due to irreconcilable differences, and the court granted the couple joint custody of their daughter. Although little is known about the official divorce settlement, according to court documents, Babyface agreed to pay his ex-wife ,500 monthly in child and spousal support until 2027.

Real Estate

Bel-Air Mansion

In February 1998, Babyface purchased a 0.48-acre plot of land in Los Angeles, California, for 5,000. He spent two years constructing an 11,005-square-foot, six-bedroom, seven-bathroom home on the land, including a wine cellar, billiards room, and home cinema. In May 2022, he listed the property for sale, with an asking price of million. The listing was reduced to .5 million in November; in March 2023, it sold for .5 million.

Beverly Hills Home

In September 2004, Babyface paid .8 million for a 7,648-square-foot, five-bedroom home in Beverly Hills, California. The sale was initially reported with a value of .15 million; however, public records reflect a .8 million closing price.

Unfortunately for Babyface, a year later, it was announced that his wife, Tracey Edmonds, was filing for divorce. As a result, he lost the property to Tracey in the settlement. According to public records, she listed the property for sale in 2013, asking for .35 million. It sold in March 2014 for .97 million.

Rancho Cucamonga Home

In March 2008, Babyface paid 0,000 for a 3,614-square-foot, four-bedroom home in Rancho Cucamonga, California, just months before the 2008 housing market crash. When he relisted the property for sale in 2012, the asking price was just 0,000. It sold for 9,000 in September, resulting in a 0,000 loss before property taxes and listing fees.

Summary

Babyface got his nickname as a teenager from funk performer Bootsy Collins, an apparent reference to his youthful looks. He has won 11 Grammy Awards and has written and produced over 26 hit songs.
