John Wick became a cultural phenomenon after the release of the first film in 2014. With its intricate characters, interconnected plotlines, and elaborate action sequences, the John Wick franchise has become one of the most popular action movie series of all time. There’s hardly a fan of action out there that doesn’t know the name of Keannu Revees’ famous assassin. The franchise is getting bigger as the years go by, and due to this, we’ve decided to create this watch order. Let’s see how to watch John Wick movies correctly.
There are currently four John Wick movies, each focusing on the titular character played by Keanu Reeves. The first movie in the John Wick series was released in 2014, and the 2017 sequel followed. The latest addition to the movie series is John Wick: Chapter 4, released in 2023
Currently, there are a total of three John Wick movies released. The franchise is owned by Summit Entertainment, a Lionsgate brand. The general overview looks like this:
John Wick movies are connected and should be watched in a specific order. The whole series so far present us with John Wick’s journey from a retired assassin to an active assassin following several tragedies. Each movie hence connects to the events that happened in the previous movies.
John Wick movies should be watched in the release date order. This order is optimal to understand worldbuilding, and character building and to figure out what the general story of the franchise is. This watch order is likewise needed to understand the motives of each recurring character in the movie series.
We start our John Wich watch order with the first movie John Wick released in 2014. Former hitman John Wick has just lost his wife Helen, who died of an undisclosed illness. Posthumously, he receives a Beagle puppy from her on the day of the funeral as a gift, along with a letter informing him that she will leave him the puppy named Daisy so that he can cope with his loss and love something again.
The next day, John drives his Ford Mustang out to get dog food. At a gas station, he meets three Russian gang members. Their leader, Iosef, admires John’s car and wants to buy it. However, John refuses and drives away.
The three Russians follow him home, break into it that night, and brutally beat John up. He has to watch helplessly as they mistreat Daisy before he is knocked unconscious. When he wakes up the next morning, Daisy, who has dragged herself to him seriously injured, is dead, and his Ford Mustang is stolen.
Our second entry of the John Wick watch order is John Wick: Chapter 2, released in 2017. A few days after John Wick killed the Russian mafia boss Viggo Tarasov and his son Iosef, John discovers his Ford Mustang is in Abram Tarasov’s workshop. This is where stolen cars are dismantled, and the individual parts are resold. Tarasov is the brother of Viggo and the uncle of Iosef. John takes his vehicle back and kills numerous men of Tarasov’s. Then he goes to Tarasov and offers him peace, which Tarasov accepts.
He has Aurelio repair his badly damaged vehicle and again seal his weapons and equipment under the floor at home in order to resume his interrupted retirement. Meanwhile, Santino D’Antonio, an Italian mafioso, and a former client visit him and demand a debt coin’s redemption. John once drew this with his blood so that Santino would help him leave the organization.
When John refuses to help and cites his retirement, Santino blows up John’s house with a grenade launcher. John then goes to the Continental, where its manager Winston reminds him of the two inviolable rules of the underworld: No “business” on the property of the Continental hotel, and debt coins must be redeemed.
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, released in 2019, is set after John Wick killed Santino D’Antonio in the Continental, he is on the run through New York. Since a bounty of 14 million US dollars was initially placed on him, and he forfeited all privileges that had been granted to him as a member of the Continental through the murder of D’Antonio, he now tries to get out of New York City escape.
He reaches the city library and takes a rosary with an “exchange medallion” from a hidden book. In the library, John is attacked by an assassin before the deadline given to him, but he is able to defeat them, even if he is seriously injured. John rushes to a well-known doctor who treats his injury.
At 6 p.m. sharp, he was “excommunicated,” and all the killers in town were hunting him. On the run from assassins, he fights his way to the Tarkovsky Theater, where he visits the director, a woman from the past who accepts the crucifix as a ticket for the safe passage to Essaouira near Casablanca in Morocco.
Meanwhile, a High Table judge meets with Winston, the manager of the Continental, and the Bowery King, the leader of a network of tramp assassins. The judge accuses them of having helped John Wick in the murder of Santino D’Antonio and admonishes both of them to give up their offices in seven days. Otherwise, they will face serious consequences.
John prepares to seek revenge against the High Table and goes into hiding with the Bowery King. He travels to Morocco and kills the Elder, the only person above the High Table. This angers senior member Marquis Vincent de Gramont, who punishes New York Continental Hotel manager Winston Scott by destroying the hotel and killing his concierge Charon. De Gramont enlists retired assassin Caine to kill John, and John seeks refuge at the Osaka Continental. De Gramont’s assassins and Caine pursue John, leading to a violent confrontation. Eventually, John returns to New York to challenge De Gramont to a duel in hopes of freeing himself from his obligations to the High Table.
You can watch the first three John Wick movies on the Amazon Prime Video streaming platform. The last movie in the series, John Wick: Chapter 4, is currently available in theaters.
There will certainly be more John Wick movies. A sequel titled John Wick: Chapter 5 is currently in development, and the first spin-off movie that the series will receive titled “Ballerina” is currently in post-production with no release date in sight. The John Wick universe is growing and will certainly involve a lot more sequels and spin-offs in the years to come.
