As the clock wound down at Michigan Stadium, the clear reality of Ohio State football came into view. Not since John Cooper in 1995, 1996, 1997 have the Buckeyes lost three in a row to Michigan, yet for fans in Columbus, the writing on the wall was as clear as ever: Ryan Day has to go. True, he had won two Big Ten championships, but a National Championship had eluded him.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is a winner. A BIG TIME winner with championship credentials in his pocket. Swinney took over for Tommy Bowden seven games into the 2008 season and never looked back. A short eight seasons later, Clemson won the National Championship, beating Alabama 35-31. For an encore, the Tigers would rout the Crimson Tide 44-16. He’s added eight ACC titles to his resume as well as two conference Coach of the Year awards. He is also the winningest coach of all time at Clemson.
But the time for honesty is now, and the time for breaking through to the next level is due in Columbus. Day has been a reasonable placeholder and an amiable fellow, but the fact remains he is a good coach, just not a great coach. He can’t win the biggest games in his orbit, which means he can’t win at the highest level. Ohio State needs to be in the mix to win National Championships every season. Day just isn’t that guy.
But Dabo is, and he’s proven it.
One important consideration is the importation of the former PAC-12 school’s Washington, Oregon, UCLA, and USC. Those teams are likely to dominate the Big Ten. Three of the four coming east are typically competing for a college football championship. Ohio State is not.
The buckeyes need a coach who has been there, done that. He’s beaten Alabama twice when Alabama was the best not just in the SEC, but in the country. It took Swinney to neutralize the Tide and break through with an ACC team. That is something Day has not and can not do. He cannot even accomplish the big three these last three seasons: best Michigan, win the Big Ten, and win a national championship. Day is a big ZERO-nine over those three objectives. In the simplest of terms, Ryan Day is not a winner.
Day is at the point in 2024 where anything less than going 3-3 in beating the Wolverines, a conference title, and a national championship is a losing season. He needs a clean sweep and everyone in the state of Ohio knows it, especially Day.
Dabo Swinney is the guy. He knows pressure. He knows winning the games you have to win. He also knows about outlining objections and meeting them. He will beat Michigan, he will win the Big Ten, and he WILL WIN a national title for Buckeye nation.
Some coaches are the real deal. Dabo Swinney is just that. Ryan Day is not.
