SB 1801 amends Section 11.43 of the Property Tax Code. Section 11.43(h-1) requires the chief
appraiser of an appraisal district to develop a program for the periodic review of each residence homestead
exemption granted by the district under Section 11.13 to confirm that the recipient of the exemptions still
qualifies for the exemption. The program must require the chief appraiser to review each residence
homestead exemption at least once every five tax years.
Brazoria CAD will begin sending homestead audits in the fall. If you do not receive correspondence
from our office, you do not need to complete a new application.

The Board of Directors for the Brazoria County Appraisal District is accepting applications from candidates seeking appointment as Appraisal Review Board (ARB) members for the 2025-2026 term. Individuals seeking appointment must be a resident of Brazoria County for at least two years and be current on property tax payments. ARB members have one full day of required training. Meeting frequency varies depending on the time of the year, but all candidates will need to be available Monday thru Thursday, May 1st thru July 31st from 8:00am-4:30pm. ARB members do not work for the Appraisal District, nor does the appointment constitute a full-time job, but members are paid a per diem of -5 per day when conducting hearings.

House Bill 394
H.B. 394 amends the Tax Code to include information that indicates the age of a property owner, including information indicating that a property owner is 65 years of age or older, among the information in property tax appraisal records that is prohibited from being posted on the Internet. The bill requires the chief appraiser for each appraisal district to ensure that any information indicating the age of a property owner that is posted on a website controlled by the appraisal district is removed from the website not later than the bill’s effective date.
S.B. 541 adds Section 25.027 to the Tax Code prohibiting the posting of appraisal records on the Internet if the information is a photograph, sketch or floor plan of an improvement to real property that is designed primarily for use as a human residence. The prohibition does not apply to an aerial photograph that depicts five or more separately owned buildings. The bill is effective September 1, 2005, and affects homeowners and appraisal districts.
All BCAD residential building measurements are done from the exterior, with individual measurements rounded to the closest foot. This measurement includes all closet space, hallways, and interior staircases. Attached garages are not included in the square footage of living area, but valued separately. Living area above attached garages is included in the square footage living area of the dwelling. Living area above detached garages is not included in the square footage living area of the dwelling but is valued separately. This method is used on all residential properties in Brazoria County to ensure the uniformity of square footage of living area measurements district-wide. There can be a reasonable variance between the BCAD square footage and your square footage measurement, especially if your square footage measurement was an interior measurement or an exterior measurement to the inch.
